Welcome to lesson 05 in Battle School. It is based on an
actual NATO exercise. Some of our Future Battle School missions will be
based on Tactical Decision Exercises (TDEs) used to train army officers.

Situation:
Our existence on Malden is threatened. It is just a
question of time before the Soviets run us over. We cannot get
reinforcements since the enemy is holding the airport. HQ has come up with
a desperate plan to capture the airport and open our supply lines. A mixed
element platoon is supposed to attack the Soviets from behind their lines,
and take them by surprise.
Mission:
You will be landed on the beach near the airport. Your
mission is to capture and hold it. Intelligence reports that the airport
itself is not very well defended since most of the troops are resting in
Saint Louis. Yesterday elements of Able company infiltrated the hills
north of the village and set up mortars. They will shell the town on your
command (Radio + Special + Request Mortars).
As soon as you have secured the airport, Charlie platoon will fly in to
assist you in holding the area. We are trying to provide some more support
by sending a supply convoy. To reach you that convoy must pass through
Saint Louis, which is controlled by the enemy. Make sure that it reaches
its destination or you will have a hard time holding the airport.
You can expect the force defending the airport to call for reinforcements
as soon as the shooting starts. It will probably come from the troops
stationed at Saint Louis and the main Soviet base at Le Passagne.

Plan Your Assault
Don't just wing it
Open your supply
lines
Have the plan in mind then execute it. You may have to adapt it;
if you loose troops in the assault.
VBS1 can do this too!
The sand box key to many a
plan. With modern simulations the soldier can now walk around the target
in VR establishing fields of fire, dead ground etc. The modern battle may
have been fought hundreds of times before it actually happens. The
conclusion already known and all the bugs ironed out.
